I was a horny teenager growing up. 

Devouring Mills & Boons and fiction where women had lots of sex.

I couldn’t wait to have sex and masturbated all the time.

I had this vision of it being this ecstatic, transcendental experience. 

When I started to have sex though, I remember feeling profoundly disappointed.

Where was the ecstasy and pleasure that I imagined penetration would be?

Sex back then had lots of desire, sweat, great kissing and occasionally, decent clit play, but when it came to actual penetration, it often felt dull.

The first few pumps were full of exquisite, sweet sensations, but then it got boring pretty fast.

I discovered that my vagina didn’t feel much during sex, and so after the initial pleasurable minutes, penetration turned into something I did for my partner’s enjoyment.

Unless I touched my clit. Which I often did to bring myself to orgasm.

I felt frustrated by this dullness of penetration because I sensed there was more pleasure available to me that I wasn’t reaching.

This frustration is part of what set me off on my sexual odyssey. 

The years I’ve spent exploring various sexual practices and teachings to feel the depths of what’s possible.

I discovered over time and from various teachers, that vaginas are indeed capable of feeling enormous pleasure.

They just often shut down into numbness, when they’ve been handled insensitively such as being penetrated before they are fully ready.

And that awakening them means putting attention onto the numbness or the pain, if that’s present, and being curious and attentive.

Going slowly. Touching with reverence. Following the cues of the body. Breathing fully into the diaphragm.

Over time I’ve awakened my vagina where penetration feels orgasmic.

Where the challenge is to hold and expand the pleasure, without tipping over quickly into orgasm.

And I’m not done, I can feel that there’s more to heal and release and awaken.
